Meet Tao, a 12-year-old Golden Retriever who had his eyes removed due to glaucoma, and Oko, his Golden Retriever guide and guide dog. Melanie Jackson owns Tao, and she recounted the tale of these two adorable puppies who are a wonderful tribute to love, compassion, and support.


Tao's glaucoma diagnosis, a condition that drains fluids from the eyes, came as a complete surprise. To make matters worse, the eye illness advanced at an alarming rate.

Tao awoke one day feeling well, but in that evening he began to demonstrate his anguish by shaking his head. Only a few hours later, he lost sight in one eye and had to have the other surgically removed. His remaining eye likewise failed in  
January and had to be removed.

Tao's glaucoma developed swiftly after his diagnosis, and he lost both eyes, yet he recovered just as quickly.


Fortunately, Tao recovered just as quickly and he was back to his old happy self in no time. Three days after the removal of his remaining eye, he was walking without a leash and could even go up the stairs without any help.

Even so, it was clear something was missing for Tao. He seemed a bit lonely and in need of company ever since he lost his sight. That’s when Melanie realized she had to do something.

Melanie stated that Tao is a healthy 12-year-old boy who does not experience discomfort. He doesn't look his age and continues to do the activities he enjoyed before losing his sight. Except for leaping over fences! Melanie and Tao go on daily 8-mile walks, and he likes training.

Oko, an 8-week-old puppy, quickly bonded with Tao and became his beloved companion.

When Melanie decided it was time to find Tao a companion, she stumbled across an 8-week-old Golden Retriever, and the two dogs instantly clicked. They've been inseparable since the day they met!
Tao and Oko share every waking and sleeping minute.

Oko has unwittingly become Tao's eyes and trusted guide due to their extensive time together. Tao always walks with the puppy and they never sleep apart.

Melanie has been teaching them both to keep Tao, who is younger and naturally more interested, out of mischief and danger. While Tao is taught to follow Oko, Oko is taught to listen to Melanie and obey her directions.

Oko has matured since his initial visit with Melanie, and he has completely embraced his job as a guide. Melanie is also dedicated to spreading awareness about glaucoma in dogs and has worked with The Kennel Club.

Melanie gave them Tao's DNA to assist researchers figure out how other dogs are affected by this eye condition. Melanie wants to do everything she can to assist because glaucoma may be prevented if detected early.
