“Pit Bulls are some of the most misunderstood dogs out there. Unfortunately, they often end up in the hands of the wrong people, who mistreat and abuse them, eventually abandoning them or getting rid of them in one way or another,” writes Nalia Orfanidou of Orphan Pet.
Matilda is one such dog. She was found on one of the busiest streets in southern Athens by a volunteer with SCARS, a dog rescue organization in the city.
At first, her rescuers thought the wounds on her body were the result of dog fighting. However, a closer examination revealed the heartbreaking truth behind her injuries.
“She was bleeding from everywhere, and most of the marks on her skin looked like dog bites, but we were wrong. Matilda’s entire skin was affected, and large pieces were falling off whenever you touched her,” writes Nalia Orfanidou of Orphan Pet.
“She suffered from a terrible itch that must have kept her awake throughout the night. She had exfoliative dermatitis caused by leishmaniasis. Sadly, this condition is very common here in Greece.”
“All those Mediterranean diseases, such as leishmaniasis and Ehrlichia, are transmitted by parasites and can often be prevented with simple preventive treatments.”
“Matilda’s owners were unwilling to provide her with regular preventive treatments or take her to a veterinarian for treatment after she became sick. Instead, they chose the heartbreaking option of abandoning her on the streets.”
“Seriously… What is wrong with people? Leishmaniasis can be treated, and many dogs can make a full recovery. Our vet is very optimistic that Matilda will recover well, and she has already started her treatment.”
Matilda is now living in a foster home with three other dogs. “And she is finally enjoying the love and affection she deserves,” says Nalia.
Once she is healthy enough, Matilda will be available for adoption through SCARS. After everything she has endured, she now has a chance to recover and find the loving forever home she deserves.
